FAQ - Yamaha AVENTAGE AVR + SONOS Integration
What is Works with Sonos?
Works with Sonos allows you to unite a Yamaha receiver with a Sonos home sound system using a Sonos Port. After a quick setup, the Sonos app can seamlessly power on the receiver, select a designated input and control the volume. The Works with Sonos badge certifies products that seamlessly connect with a Sonos system.
Which Yamaha models support Works with Sonos?
As of May 2025, four Yamaha home audio products support Works with Sonos: RX-A8A, RX-A6A, RX-A4A and RX-A2A. These models make up the current AVENTAGE AV receiver line.
How many Sonos Ports can be used with a Yamaha receiver as inputs?
Up to three (3) Sonos Ports total are supported, depending on the Yamaha receiver used. Only a single Sonos Port is needed to provide a source for the receiver. The addition of a second or third Sonos Port may be helpful if independent streams are desired for the receiver’s Zone 2 and/or Zone 3 outputs.
Important additional notes:
-
a) When either Party Mode or Pure Direct Mode is engaged, the Sonos Port(s) assigned to Zone 2 or 3 will not work in sync with the receiver. This is because Party Mode and Pure Direct are Main Zone-dictating modes, which can’t be defeated by actions from Zone 2 or 3. Disengage Party Mode or Pure Direct mode to solve this issue.
-
b) Adding a second or third Sonos Port to provide independent streams for Zone 2/3 and attempting to link them with the Main Zone can introduce audio sync issues.
Use of more than one Sonos Port is only recommended if Zone 2/3 are acoustically isolated from the Main Zone.
How many total Sonos devices can be connected to a given Wi-Fi/Ethernet network?
Yamaha’s implementation of Works with Sonos is designed to support the connection of up to three Sonos Ports to the receiver, and to find up to 16 total Sonos devices on a network during setup.
Which outputs on the Sonos Port can be used?
You can use either the analog or digital outputs on Sonos Port to connect to a Yamaha receiver.
Will Yamaha’s implementation of Works with Sonos allow for the Sonos Port output to be set to either “Variable” or “Fixed”?
Yes. Within the Sonos app, the analog output of the Sonos Port can be set to “Variable” or “Fixed”. “Variable” lets you control the output level of the Sonos Port from the Sonos app, but not from the receiver. “Fixed” lets you control the volume from the receiver but not the output level from the Sonos Port.
Can Works with Sonos be set up through the Yamaha receiver’s main menu?
As of May 2025, only the MusicCast app can be used to set up Works with Sonos for current AVENTAGE receivers.
Will Yamaha’s Works with Sonos implementation support Sonos S1 or only S2?
Sonos Port is only compatible with the S2 app, therefore S1 is not supported.
